DROPKICK MURPHYS
ENTER "BILLBOARD 200" CHART AT #6
WITH NEW CD 'GOING OUT IN STYLE'
VIDEO FOR "MEMORIAL DAY" TO DEBUT ON MTV2 AND mtvU MARCH 17
OPENERS FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY WEEK SHOWS REVEALED
Dropkick Murphys' critically acclaimed new CD Going Out In Style (Born & Bred Records/ILG) has entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #6, with sales of 43,000. This marks the group's highest chart debut to date, following their #20 entry with 2007's The Meanest Of Times. On Going Out In Style, Dropkick Murphys revel in the Irish tradition of telling tales of triumph, tragedy and celebration through music.
The band's video for "Memorial Day," the first radio single from their seventh full-length studio album, will debut on MTV2 and mtvU next Thursday, March 17 in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. With band performance footage interspersed throughout, the "Memorial Day" video follows dual story lines. In one, Dropkick's Ken Casey and Al Barr appear as motivational speakers at a leadership conference, running their corporate audience through familiar team-building exercises. The other flashes back to follow a delinquent youth from elementary school exploits to teenage run-ins with the law.
Dropkick Murphys—Al Barr (lead vocals), Tim Brennan (guitars, accordion, whistle, vocals), Ken Casey (lead vocals, bass guitar), Jeff DaRosa (banjo, bouzouki, mandolin, harmonica, vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, vocals), James Lynch (guitar, vocals), and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes)—are touring the U.S. on their annual St. Patrick's Day trek, which wraps up in Boston with a string of St. Patty's Day week hometown gigs. The opening acts for DKM's run of Boston area shows St. Patrick's Day week are as follows:

Going Out In Style has received a wide range of praise since its March 1 release. Here's a sample of the critical acclaim:
"On its seventh studio album, the Boston band continues waving twin flags of revelry and revolution, hosting a raucous barroom party while whipping up fervor for organized labor and other social causes. Much of Style stems from the band's family histories, compressed into the struggle of fictional character Cornelius Larkin. The tales are funny, moving, inspiring and, above all, entertaining."
—Edna Gundersen, USA Today, March 1, 2011
"Talk about hitting the battlefield with both barrels blazing…You want everything that has made the Murphys the pride of Boston distilled into four incendiary minutes? That would be the kick-off number 'Hang 'Em High,' a pipe-bomb roar of gutter-punk guitars, soccer-hooligan choruses and whiskey-blitzed bagpipes…the Murphys bring him [Cornelius Larkin] to life with 13 razor-sharp tracks that celebrate everything from Bobby Orr and Beantown ('Going Out In Style') to Minor Threat and Agnostic Front ('Sunday Hardcore Matinee'). Whether taking aim at the mosh pit with the bloody-knuckles punk of 'The Hardest Mile' or heading into the pub for a Sunday afternoon sing-along with 'Take 'Em Down,' Boston's finest prove that far from having nothing left to say, they're just getting started."
—Mike Usinger, Alternative Press, April 2011
"Never let us take for granted the treasure we have in our own backyard with this rambunctious and clever crew of hell-raisers and heartbreakers. On Dropkick Murphys' seventh album…the septet's hearts are as big as their mouths. The group barrels its way through 13 tracks that feature the signature DKM stew of punk, rock, folk, and Irish sounds and familiar themes including the bonds of family — whether that comes in the form of insane but lovable relatives or union brothers standing in solidarity. This time out, there's a conceptual framework laid over the proceedings in the tale of the dearly departed, and fictional, Cornelius Larkin. The various stages of his life are chronicled in song, but like many concept albums, one needn't understand every plot point to enjoy Going Out In Style. Instead, you can dig into the sometimes delicate, sometimes furious banjo and bagpipe pas de deux, the deliriously tortured barks of Al Barr and Ken Casey, and the relentless rhythms that power the enterprise."
—Sarah Rodman, Boston Globe, March 1, 2011
"Aerosmith sold more records, New Kids on the Block sold more lunch boxes and Boston named itself after our fair city, but none of them can write a hometown anthem like the Dropkick Murphys."
—Jed Gottlieb, Boston Herald, February 28, 2011
"Boston's most treasured punk success…The Dropkicks paid about a decade's worth of dues in the punk-rock salt mines before hitting it big…There's an underlying optimism to the Dropkicks that's rare for punk people. It's the idea that a little pride in wherever and whatever you're from—even if we're talking about a conceptual 'place' like punk rock—provides spiritual and psychic armor against the abyss."
—Barry Thompson, Boston Phoenix, February 22, 2011
"The Boston Irish-punk septet never met a shout-along chorus they didn't want to crash into, with a bagpipe tooting along for an extra shot of old-world poignancy. Going Out In Style…veers into tears-in-your-pint sentimentality on ballads like '1953.' But reservations disappear at the sound of full-fathom burner 'Peg 'O My Heart,' a sweet, boozy love song with guest vocals by anther guy who takes no quarter: Bruce Springsteen."
—Jody Rosen, Rolling Stone, March 3, 2011
"More lovable mayhem from Boston Red Sox's house band…The 13 songs that make up Going Out In Style feature hard-working characters working early-morning jobs while living late-night lifestyles, a mixture of Protestant work ethic and a Catholic lust for life. Thrown onto punk music that is emotionally stirring as it is tested…"
—Ian Winwood, Kerrang!, February 26, 2011
"Going Out In Style sees Boston's favorite Irish rockers stretching their sound into a theatrical epic about the funeral and life of the fictional Cornelius Larkin. This character makes the album utterly fascinating thematically, but the music is equally engaging. 'Hang 'Em High' charges at full-speed with a barrage of hammering riffs, bagpipes, and thunderous vocals. 'The Hardest Mile' builds with the same kind of bombast before snapping into a melody fit for any karaoke night. Then there's the title track, which mixes and matches hilarious tales and punk rock verses into the band's most anthemic number since 'I'm Shipping Up To Boston.' Dropkick Murphys keep Larkin's story interesting with the poignant and elegiac 'Memorial Day,' before bringing it back to their hardcore roots with 'Sunday Hardcore Matinee'."
—Rick Florino, Shockhound.com, March 1, 2011
"It's very diverse and complex…It's a CD created to make you feel at home whether you're jamming out by yourself or singing along with some buddies in a bar in a glorified unity. I'm not taking anything away from what the band has done in the past but their newest album is their best yet…In A Word: Captivating…Grade: A-."
—Giorgio Mustica, Aquarian Weekly, February 9, 2011
"…there is tangible emotion throughout the album, which, in conjunction with the masterful song construction, makes this the best Dropkick Murphys release yet…The band has always taken risks while preserving its identity, and this concept album is the highlight of its career so far."
—Nick Mindicino, USC Daily Trojan, March 1, 2011
"…Dropkick Murphys delivers an entertaining, celebratory eulogy for imaginary character Cornelius Larkin on their latest…The album appropriately jumps between old world Irish folk and their punk infused take on it. The stomping hook and accordion and shaggy guitar of kicked-up, blue collar 'The Hardest Mile,' charming, tin whistle infused ode to stubborn youth 'Cruel' and sparkling, melodic 'Broken Hymns' stand out…The shuffling riffs, breezy mandolin and blowing whistle of 'Memorial Day' and the bristling acoustic and intertwined electric guitars of love struck standard 'Peg O' My Heart,' featuring a fantastic guest appearance from Bruce Springsteen, find the two songs walking a fine line between the two worlds."
—Chad Grischow, IGN.com, March 2, 2011
"The force behind Boston's most notorious band has just been doubled with this new CD hitting stores just in time for St. Patty's Day. The songs on this album tell stories that some of us can relate to and others that just make you want to slam a Guinness and jump in the pit. Musically, the use of accordion and banjo has never had a more harmonious marriage than on this album. Each song really pulls together the Murphys' use of nontraditional instrumentation."
—David Tobin, Campus Circle, March 2, 2011
"…this record is one that stands out as the highlight of their career."
—Jeremy Gartzke, Daily Cardinal, February 28, 2011
"While there are more than 8,000,000 rock bands in the world, it is still incredibly difficult to find outstanding bands out there. However, without a doubt, Dropkick Murphys is one of them…a creative and magic blend of Irish folk rock and punk rock, which make their music unique."
—Eiko Watanabe, BlastMagazine.com, February 7, 2011
"…Going Out In Style is all killer, no filler — an instant DKM classic worthy of ranking next to The Warrior's Code…the best new album of 2011. It's not just pissah, it's wicked pissah."
—Mick Stingley, Rocksalt.mx, February 21, 2011
