DROPKICK MURPHYS
TO PERFORM "GOING OUT IN STYLE"
ON 'CONAN' OCTOBER 13
BAND HEADLINES TWO SOLD-OUT SHOWS AT
BOSTON'S FENWAY PARK
Dropkick Murphys are set to perform their single "Going Out In Style" on Conan (TBS, 11pm PDT/EDT, 10pm CDT) on Thursday, October 13. "Going Out In Style"—a rousing, celebratory tale of an Irish wake as seen through the eyes of the deceased—appears on Dropkick Murphys' critically acclaimed album of the same name (on the band-owned Born & Bred Records), which debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 in March. The video for the song was featured at #1 on Rolling Stone's "Hot List" earlier this year.
Dropkick Murphys' Conan performance is sandwiched between shows in San Diego (October 11-12), the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas (October 14) and The Palladium in Los Angeles (October 15). Immediately following this west coast swing, the band heads to Australia for a week of tour dates.
Dropkick Murphys recently headlined a pair of sold out shows (10,000 people per night) on September 8 and 9 at Boston's Fenway Park, earning rave reviews.
"Dropkick Murphys transformed hallowed ground into a hell of a time," wrote the Boston Globe's Scott McLennan of the Fenway shows.
"Wicked awesome punk rock," added Jed Gottlieb of the Boston Herald. "These guys always have been legit and proved it again last night. Their politics are punk — 'Take 'Em Down' is a Clash-style union rally cry. And when they unload their blitzing, blistering rock 'n' roll, as they did on 'The State of Massachusetts,' they're as good as anybody in the genre ever."
Tickets for the two shows at the band's hometown ballpark sold out in just 30 minutes. One day after the Fenway shows, the band launched its inaugural eight-city Shamrock-N-Roll Festival. An Irish music festival with an edge, the Shamrock-N-Roll Festival celebrated the cross-pollination between Irish folk traditions and modern music with Dropkick Murphys and other artists including Stiff Little Fingers, Street Dogs, Chuck Ragan, The Mahones, The Parkington Sisters, and others performing on two stages. "You can't beat one of the best line-ups I've ever seen, and a rare chance to see some of the best in the punk-rock community all playing together. Sláinte," was Willie Clark's assessment of the festival for Rochester's alt-weekly City Newspaper.
On September 21, Dropkick Murphys—who have a long history of supporting workers rights and union causes both directly and in their songs—were named to the Irish Echo's Irish Labor 50. The awards honor 50 leading Irish-American men and women in today's labor movement, and recognize their place in a long history of Irish-American labor activism. Earlier this year, Dropkick Murphys' song "Take 'Em Down" (from Going Out In Style) was used as a rallying cry by the AFL-CIO, SEIU (Service Employees International Union) and AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) during labor disputes in Wisconsin, much to the chagrin of some conservative commentators. "Take 'Em Down" is based on the experiences of some DKM band members' grandfathers as union organizers in the 1950s.
